Or, the "programmers can't be analysts or modelers" stereotype. I also had to deal with "UML astronaut hipsters know it all" people, that started a childish unprofessional "I know more UML than you" competition instead of doing their job. I had several projects where I documented their software, as a programmer, and it helped a lot, cause other programmers use it. I suggest, still learn UML & other techniques like BPM, even if your employers don't. Some of them hire UML analysts, and interrupt them and coerce them to do programming, a lot. Some of my customers / contractors used, some of them not. Learning design and programming, at the same time, may be tedious, but it worths the results. I was lucky to learn Software Modeling along with programming, at an early age, with other techniques, before UML appeared, like E-R modeling, and switched to UML later. In UML, the lifeline is represented by a. It portrays the communication between any two lifelines as a time-ordered sequence of events, such that these lifelines took part at the run time. It helps in envisioning several dynamic scenarios. There's this "UML is obsolete" or "documenting your code" trend going on, which it's stupid. The sequence diagram represents the flow of messages in the system and is also termed as an event diagram. Unfortunately, it's getting "out of fashion", which is bad cause I think documenting your business' operations shouldn't be a trend. Generally speaking, it was used years ago. It depends on the company, and not as it should. ![]() We could always do with more help and wisdom, friend!
